After being initially drawn by the shadows of trees that she saw in the grass, she spent months delving into a technique thatconversely didn't present the chosen subject as a 2-dimensional representation on canvas. It is more like the subject has been transformed into it's own representation which is based its interpretation from the artist. This is especially effective for objects that are living or objects that can be perishable such as fruits or people. Alexa Meade's paintings are ephemeral, but the photo is what remains. Photography and painting techniques are tightly coordinated, resulting in a two-dimensional, flat space that achieves trompe l'oeil. Certain elements of the picture like hair and eyes, reveal the 3D dimension. Meade sometimes incorporates painted models into the environment around them. They are able to be part of the world the artist has constructed. This is a way of breaking down the barriers between painting, photography, performances and installations.
